AAUW National’s Position
AAUW trusts that every woman has the ability to make her own informed choices regarding her reproductive life within the dictates of her own moral and religious beliefs. Further, AAUW believes that these deeply personal decisions should be made without government interference. AAUW members have made the protection of reproductive rights a policy principle since 1977.

WHY WE ARE MARCHING
Our bodily autonomy and right to safe, legal abortion are in serious danger. As you have no doubt seen in the news, two weeks ago, the Supreme Court turned its back on 50 years of precedent, rendering Roe v. Wade effectively meaningless in Texas. The Supreme Court declined to block the 6-week ban, setting a scary precedent for future court decisions. This law gives anyone in the country, including curbside clinic protestors and abusive partners, the right to sue a Texan who helps someone get an abortion, with an incentive of at least $10,000. Taken alongside the Supreme Court’s decision to hear arguments in the Mississippi 15-week ban case, brought by Jackson Women’s Health Organization, this fall, our movement is facing a grave threat to abortion access and rights in decades with grave implications for communities across the country.

If we don’t act now, Tennessee will be next. The Tennessee legislature passed a “trigger law” that automatically bans abortion as soon as Roe v. Wade is fully or partially overturned.

Tennessee’s upcoming redistricting decisions are important to your community. This meeting is an opportunity to learn more about the specific approach in Tennessee as well as an opportunity to provide input. We welcome brief, informal statements from individuals and groups that can be shared with the Tennessee House Select Committee on Redistricting which is responsible for drafting statewide maps. These maps will determine the new political boundaries for the Congressional, Tennessee Senate, and Tennessee House districts.

A healthy democracy is built on fair representation for all communities in the state. We believe that the people who live in a community know it best and understand when unified representation will serve their community of interest the best way possible.

Contact president@lwvtn.org to reserve your spot to speak. Whether your concern is for the best way to have representation for your local community, a region of the state, or the entire state, we would like to hear from you. Please plan to limit your statement to 3 minutes.

Speakers can access the meeting in person at the Clarksville location or virtually at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMvf-Cgrz4qGd34YzcaRlTY1bAvr3V4bCqV
