Tennessee’s upcoming redistricting decisions are important to your community. This meeting is an opportunity to learn more about the specific approach in Tennessee as well as an opportunity to provide input. We welcome brief, informal statements from individuals and groups that can be shared with the Tennessee House Select Committee on Redistricting which is responsible for drafting statewide maps. These maps will determine the new political boundaries for the Congressional, Tennessee Senate, and Tennessee House districts.

A healthy democracy is built on fair representation for all communities in the state. We believe that the people who live in a community know it best and understand when unified representation will serve their community of interest the best way possible.

Contact president@lwvtn.org to reserve your spot to speak. Whether your concern is for the best way to have representation for your local community, a region of the state, or the entire state, we would like to hear from you. Please plan to limit your statement to 3 minutes.

Speakers can access the meeting in person at the Clarksville location or virtually at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMvf-Cgrz4qGd34YzcaRlTY1bAvr3V4bCqV

Redistricting

Redistricting

What is redistricting, and why is it important right now?

When new census data is collected every 10 years, states redraw their state and congressional district lines. These districts determine how communities are represented at the local, state, and federal levels. The redistricting process is fundamental in influencing how our government works for us.

Redistricting will be happening in the fall of 2021 in Tennessee and Rutherford County.

Fair redistricting is an important part of the democratic process, as it upholds the sanctity of one person, one vote; and ensures fair representation at every level. Congress has the power to ensure a fair redistricting by putting in guardrails for elections and redistricting by supporting the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act.

The League of Women Voters will be offering programs this fall that specifically address redistricting here in Rutherford County.
